Project Description

The Myrtlewood Field Office proposes to conduct timber harvest actions including commercial thinning and regeneration harvest on approximately 1,300 acres of the Harvest Land Base (HLB) land use allocation (LUA) in stands aged 30–90 years old in the South Fork Coquille River 5th field watershed (Map 1). Potential harvest units are in the HLB Low Intensity Timber Area (LITA) and Moderate Intensity Timber Area (MITA) and the Riparian Reserve LUAs under the 2016 Northwestern and Coastal Oregon Record of Decision/Resource Management Plan (ROD/RMP). Commercial thinning is proposed in the outer zone of Riparian Reserves across Class I and II watersheds as well as in a portion of the HLB LUA. Regenerated stands would be prepared for replanting by removing most of the residual logging slash through broadcast or pile burning. Management direction in the ROD/RMP for each LUA will guide proposed treatments. 

The project has three action alternatives. The first is variable retention harvest of stands in the Harvest Land Base (HLB); the second is commercial thinning within the HLB and some RR; and the third is a mixture of harvests based on stand ages within the HLB and thinning within the RR.

What's New

This EA has been completed and Timber Sale decisions are anticipated in FY 2026 and 2027.
