Project Description

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Medford District has approved the Integrated Vegetation Management for Resilient Lands Environmental Assessment. Based on the analysis contained in this environmental assessment, the BLM has approved a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI), determining that the program of work authorized under Alternative C, as modified, would not significantly affect the human environment, and therefore an environmental impact statement (EIS) is not required. The forests of southwest Oregon are fire-adapted ecosystems. Due to fire exclusion and other land management activities, our forests are in dire need of proactive management to increase their ability to respond to impending threats of fire, drought and disease. The key to future resilience is promoting low density forests, helping to reduce competition for resources among trees and allowing them to grow larger and have a greater capacity to withstand disturbance. The project will aid to develop and retain legacy trees, and decrease fuel continuity to reduce the risk of large-scale, high severity fires. Actions will be taken to improve and speed the development of habitats for sensitive wildlife and plant species, including the northern spotted owl.

What the programmatic Decision Record Authorized:

A program of work authorized under Alternative C, as modified, includes the following:

Commercial treatments- 4,000 acres per year (0.6 percent of the Treatment Area); 20,000 acres over 10-years (2.9 percent of the Treatment Area).

Small diameter thinning - 6,500 acres per year (1.0 percent of the Treatment Area); 60,000 acres over 10-years (8.7 percent of the Treatment Area).

Prescribed fire- 7,500 acres per year (1.1 percent of the Treatment Area); 70,000 acres over 10-years (10.2 percent of the Treatment Area).

Temporary road construction- 10 miles per year; 90 miles over 10-years (the BLM maintains approximately 5,000 miles of roads in the Medford District).

The BLM explained on March 2, 2022 that the approval of this programmatic Decision Record did not authorize ground-disturbing activities and did not authorize any projects.
