Project Description

There is a need to control a large population of Spartium junceum (Spanish broom) located at the Mokelumne River Big Bar Launch area. Big Bar is one of the most popular recreation sites managed by the BLM Mother Lode Field Office. The site provides day use parking, picnic sites, and river access facilities to visitors. Large stands of Spanish broom along the riverbank and beach limit public use of the area and present hazardous fuels. There are also a few scattered individuals of Genista monspessulana (French broom) at the site. To provide safe and accessible river access and reduce fire risk, BLM proposes to remove broom species using mechanical removal and cut-stump herbicide application which would involve cutting broom stems with chainsaws and immediately applying herbicide to stumps.

Exempt activity as defined in the 2019 State Protocol.
