Project Description

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is working with the Montana Sage Grouse Habitat Conservation Program, NorVal Electric Cooperative, US Army Corps of Engineers, and US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) to replace about 25 miles of existing overhead powerlines with buried powerlines to The Pines and spur lines along Willow Creek Road south of Glasgow, MT. This includes about 20 miles on BLM, 4 miles on FWS Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge/US Army Corps of Engineers, and 1 mile on private land. As this route was being planned, BLM received a Right of Way request from Nemont Telephone Cooperative, Inc. proposing to replace an existing copper line with a fiber optic line to The Pines. The electric and fiber optic proposals are being combined for analysis since they both propose to replace similar existing infrastructure and would occur along the same route to The Pines. Additionally, both the electric and fiber optic lines would be installed in the same location at the same time but at different depths.
