Project Description

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Eastern States Office (ESO) conducts competitive sales to lease available oil and gas parcels. In compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), the Southeastern States District Office (SSDO) will prepare an Environmental Assessment (EA) for several Expressions of Interest (EOIs) in Arkansas and Louisiana, in anticipation of an oil/gas lease sale to occur in March 2026. 

Leasing is the first step in the process to develop federal oil and gas resources. Before development operations can begin, an operator must submit an application for permit to drill detailing development plans. The BLM reviews applications for permits to drill, posts them for public review, conducts an environmental analysis and coordinates with state partners and stakeholders.

All parcels that are included in a federal oil and gas lease sale include appropriate stipulations to protect important natural resources. Information on current and upcoming BLM leases is available through the National Fluid Lease Sale System. BLM lease sales are held online through EnergyNet.

The EA, FONSI, and Decision Records for the Arkansas and Louisiana EOIs, ES00019209 and ES00019557, for the March 2026 oil and gas lease sale are signed and posted under the Documents page. The lease sale was held on March 12. Please see the sale results on the Documents page to see the results of the bidding.
