Project Description

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Ukiah Field Office is proposing to implement a restoration management strategy across several project locations within the South Cow Mountain OHV Management Area aim to improve hydrological function, prevent soil loss and sediment pollution, and maintain and enhance meadow and riparian vegetation. The proposed project areas—Lost Valley, Eight Mile Valley, and Scotts Creek—are experiencing head-cutting, bank erosion, channelization, and loss of mesic habitat for plants and wildlife. Ongoing erosion at the project sites contributes sediment pollution to downstream ecosystems. Lost Valley drains to Morrison Creek, a tributary of the Russian River, ,  while both Eight Mile Valley and Scotts Creek drain to the Clear Lake Watershed, a waterbody that is being monitored and regulated under the Clean Water Act due to water quality concerns.  If left untreated, erosive process at the project sites are expected to continue and grow exponentially rather than linearly over time.
The project will implement several different restoration techniques to address degradation of these sites and accomplish its goal. Restoration actions will include the installation of “low-tech” restoration structures such as Beaver Dam Analogs (BDAs), willow mats, and native riparian plantings to stabilize headcuts, reconnect floodplains, and enhance riparian vegetation.
