Project Description

The Northeastern States District Office of the BLM is responsible for managing eight islands in the Milwaukee River, located in Milwaukee, Ozaukee, and Washington counties, Wisconsin. These islands average 1.58 acres in size, totaling approximately 13 acres. The islands have become overrun by invasive vegetation, degrading the islands and preventing public use of the land. Invasive species degrade wildlife habitat, transmit diseases and contribute to human health issues, and raise operating costs for many industries, which are in turn felt by consumers in the form of higher water and electrical bills. The BLM proposes utilizing domestic goats to control invasive vegetation species, These activities would be conducted beginning in the summer-fall of 2023.
