Project Description

The U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) is proposing to establish a categorical exclusion (CE) that could be used for compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969, as amended (42 U.S.C. §§ 4321 et seq.) (NEPA) by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to support authorization of the harvest of dead or dying trees impacted by biotic or abiotic disturbances. This kind of harvest activity is commonly referred to as “salvage harvest.” Salvage harvest helps to recover economic timber value, contributes to rural economies, accelerates reestablishing native resilient forest tree species, reduces future wildfire fuel loads, and reduces hazards to wildland firefighters, the public, and infrastructure from dead or dying trees.
