Project Description
What's New
Twin Metals Minnesota's Proposed Mine Plan of OperationsTwin Metals Minnesota LLC (TMM) submitted its proposed mine plan of operations on December 18, 2019, for a mine to produce copper, nickel, cobalt, and precious metals on the Superior National Forest in northeastern Minnesota. The Bureau of Land Management's (BLM) next step is to prepare a detailed Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act that would thoroughly analyze the potential environmental impacts from the proposed mine. Public involvement at the scoping and draft Environmental Impact Statement phases would be conducted in accordance with 40 C.F.R. § 1506.6.
Twin Metals Minnesota has also submitted a preference right lease application (PRLA) for lands on which it has prospecting permits. The BLM will consider both the PRLA and the proposed mine in the same EIS.
While the BLM will not be preparing a joint Environmental Impact Statement with the State of Minnesota, which announced on Nov. 22, 2019, that it will prepare an independent, state-only EIS for the proposed project, the BLM will continue to work cooperatively with the State of Minnesota to reduce duplication and to share data and information. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources maintains a separate website for its environmental review process at http://twinmetals.mn.gov/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery .
The mine plan of operations is available in the Documents section in the left side of this page. A map showing the location of the proposed new lease is in the Maps section. Basic shapefiles, showing the project area, extent of potential surface disturbance, and locations of project features, as well as a geodatabase that includes more detailed feature classes, are in the Data section. All of these GIS files were created by TMM. The BLM will periodically update this website as new information becomes available.
