Project Description

The BLM proposes to gather and remove excess wild horses from the Sand Wash Basin HMA to achieve and maintain the Appropriate Management Level (AML) of 163–362 wild horses. The gather will use a combination of helicopter drive-trapping, bait/water trapping, and fertility control treatments as described in the EA. The action is necessary to restore a thriving natural ecological balance, prevent further rangeland degradation, and address impacts to wildlife, livestock, and sensitive habitats. Gather operations may occur over multiple years, with periodic removals as needed to maintain AML. All activities will follow the Comprehensive Animal Welfare Program (CAWP) standards and BLM policy.
