Project Description

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) plans to conduct a wild horse drive‑trap gather in the Fifteenmile Wild Horse Herd Management Area (HMA), about 40 miles northwest of Worland, Wyoming. To ensure the safety of the public, BLM personnel, contractors, and the horses themselves, BLM is proposing a temporary closure of public lands within the HMA and within a two‑mile radius of any satellite trap locations used during the gather.

Wild horses placed in temporary holding facilities are easily startled and may pose risks to nearby people. Drive‑trap operations also concentrate animals at trap sites and rely on low‑flying helicopters, creating additional hazards for unaware members of the public. The temporary closure would prevent public access near trap sites, holding areas, and helicopter operations so gather activities can be carried out safely, efficiently, and humanely.

Gather operations are tentatively scheduled for September 15–30, 2026. During this period, all public entry within closure areas would be prohibited. Only essential gather personnel and escorted public observers, following BLM’s observation policies, would be allowed. BLM will announce all temporary closures and post signage in accordance with 43 CFR 8364.1.
