Frequently Asked Questions
How much revenue will the renewed leases generate?
The lease renewals are expected to generate millions of dollars in federal revenue over the life of the leases through royalties, fees, and associated economic activity. This supports not only federal priorities but also local and regional economic development.
Will Missouri benefit financially from the lease renewals?
Yes. Mining operations on federal lands include revenue sharing with the State of Missouri. A portion of royalties collected is distributed to the Missouri State School Fund, supporting essential public services like education and infrastructure. The Department of the Interior’s Office of Natural Resources Revenue disburses 25 percent of the revenue from the Doe Run mineral leases to the State of Missouri.
Does the federal government control how Missouri spends its share of mining revenues?
No. While the federal government distributes a share of mining revenue to the state, it doesn’t control or direct how those funds are used. Allocation decisions are made at the state level.
Will this project increase surface impacts in the Mark Twain National Forest?
Minimal surface disturbance is planned—no more than 162 acres—for exploratory activities. Most operations will occur underground or on previously disturbed areas.
