The BLM is evaluating an application from the Nez Perce Tribe for the installation of 2 remote fish monitoring systems on Lolo Creek. The purpose of this project is to capture data on migration habits of Stealhead and Salmon fish populations. The first site is proposed for downstream of the current Fish Weir location (IDI-37057), while the second lies upstream about 2 miles. Both locations consist of in-stream sensors and a side-stream data collection station. Site 1 (the Fish Weir site) would utilize power provided by Clearwater Power Co. as a permanent power source and phone lines provided by Frontier Communications to transmit data to a central facility. Site 2 would utilize solar power cells as its primary means of power with a propane generator as a backup source (generator and propane tank) and a satellite communications system to transmit data to a central facility. Both locations are in accessible areas within the Upper Lolo Creek ACEC. The Cottonwood RMP allows for new right-of-ways in this section of the ACEC.
