Project Description:
The Bureau of Land Management¿s (BLM) Coeur d¿Alene Field Office is proposing the mitigation (closure) of hazardous openings at abandoned mines on public land. Mine closure work under the BLM¿s Abandoned Mine Lands (AML) program focuses on hazardous openings that pose a threat to public health and safety. For fiscal year 2011, the name (and number) of the targeted openings in the BLM¿s AML database are: Butcher adit (1), Crown Point adit (1), Lottie L adit (1), Simia adit (1), and Vindicator cache room (1). The openings would be closed by either backfilling with waste rock piled near the openings or polyurethane foam (PUF); or, installation of a bat grate, a bat grate culvert, or a bat gate. The type of closure would depend on the type of opening, the stability of an opening, and wildlife habitat within the workings. Bat grates, culverts and/or gates would be utilized whenever meaningful bat habitat is present. PUF closures would be covered with soil and rock to hide and protect the PUF.
