Mineral Materials Sampling Proposal
In June 2016, BLM received an application from Martin Marietta to obtain mineral materials northwest of Canon City, CO, near Parkdale. Click here to see maps.

Mineral materials are typically used in the aggregate industry and are vital ingredients for concrete and asphalt products, such as roads. Click here for more information.

With this application was also a request to conduct some sampling efforts, in order to better understand the formation characteristics before moving forward with any larger-scale action.

Proposed sampling activities to collect core samples will disturb an estimated 12.5 acres –

        -  approximately 29,300 feet of average, 10' wide exploration routes
        -  nine drill pads, approximately 20' by 50'
        -  nine boreholes drilled to an approximate depth of 300' each

Reclamation of drill pads and access routes will be started as soon as drilling on a location is complete. Reclamation will consist of regrading disturbances to blend in with the surrounding topography, topsoil replacement, fertilizer application, seeding and mulching. All boreholes will be plugged and sealed in accordance with State of Colorado requirements.

BLM approved the proposed mineral material sampling activities on April 13, 2018. The Environmental Assessment (EA), Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) and Record of Decision (ROD) are all accessible through the menu items on this page.
