Public Review and Comment Period Now Open
The Prineville District BLM is requesting input regarding a proposed project to manage vegetation on approximately 5,200 acres within the BLM La Pine Management Area, a 42,000 acre tract of forest land located within the La Pine Basin in southern Deschutes and northern Klamath Counties.  The BLM has prepared the Outback Forest Management Environmental Assessment (EA) (DOI-BLM-ORWA-P000-2017-0003-EA) that analyzes the potential effects of these proposed actions.  The EA document and an unsigned Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) are available by clicking on the "Documents" link to the left.

The EA analyzes three alternatives.  The proposed action would reduce tree densities and treat other vegetation and fuels through a combination of harvest/removal, mechanical reduction, and prescribed burning of natural and residual activity fuels.  The proposed action would treat almost 3,000 acres with treatments focused on fuels reduction and just over 2,000 acres with treatments focused on ponderosa pine restoration.  An alternative to the Proposed Action would treat a slightly reduced number of acres with narrower fuelbreaks and increased residual tree density.  Both action alternatives include actions to close a total of three miles of existing routes that are short, redundant or user-created routes that are not needed for public or agency needs.  A no action alternative was also analyzed, where no vegetation management or road closures would occur.

Before it issues a decision, the BLM is soliciting public comments on the EA.

If you have comments on the EA you would like the BLM to consider, they must be received in writing or via e-mail at the Prineville District office by close of business on July 13, 2018.
