Planning for recreation in the area will seek to manage recreational activities to the extent compatible with:
Managing the habitat for biodiversity and ecosystem health with special emphasis on specific wildlife and plant species, and
Protecting significant cultural sites from human disturbance and destruction.
Data gathered in this recreation analysis will inform management decisions at many levels. This effort compliments a number of on-going planning efforts we have shared with you and that many of you are participating in.
The term "areas of critical environmental concern" (often referred as "ACECs") means areas within the public lands where special management attention is required to protect and prevent irreparable damage to important historic, cultural, or scenic values, fish and wildlife resources or other natural systems or processes, or to protect life and safety from natural hazards.
The ACECs in Gold Butte were designated in 1998.
This area includes the following ACECs and the values for which the ACECs were established to conserve:
Gold Butte (Part A) – Desert Tortoise Critical Habitat
Gold Butte (Part B) – Cultural, scenic, wildlife habitat, sensitive species
Gold Butte (Part C) – wildlife habitat, scenic, botanical
Gold Butte Townsites – historic mining
Red Rock Spring – prehistoric habitation, rock art
Whitney Pocket - prehistoric habitation, historic, rock art
Devil’s Throat – natural hazard - sinkhole
