Project Description

The project aims to enhance the ecological integrity of the Stony Creek stream system by implementing a low-tech, process-based stream restoration initiative. This restoration focuses on utilizing simple, cost-effective techniques that work with natural processes to restore and enhance stream functions, habitats, and water quality. The techniques to be utilized include beaver dam analogues, post-assisted log structures, and Zeedyk rock structures. Only natural materials such as wood posts, branches, and rocks will be used. All structures will be constructed by hand. These restoration techniques address degradation from stream and meadow incision and improve overall hydrologic conditions.

The project also proposes to reduce encroaching western juniper (Juniperus occidentalis) cover in the riparian area through hand removal. Plug planting and seeding of native vegetation along the stream banks will also be performed. Restoration of native vegetation improves riparian health, wildlife habitat, and stabilizes soils. The combination of restoration activities aligns with the guidance from the 2008 Eagle Lake Resource Management Plan and Record of Decision. The total project area is 61 acres.
