The BLM is soliciting public comments to identify issues
and concerns for its environmental analysis of a proposed competitive oil
and gas lease sale involving one parcel totaling 70 acres in Kalamazoo
County, Michigan.
Leasing is the first step in the process to develop federal
oil and gas resources. Before development operations can begin, an operator
must submit an application for permit to drill detailing development plans. The
BLM reviews applications for permits to drill, posts them for public review,
conducts an environmental analysis and coordinates with state partners and
stakeholders.
All parcels that are
included in a federal oil and gas lease sale include appropriate stipulations
to protect important natural resources. Information on current and upcoming BLM
leases is available through the National Fluid Lease Sale System.
BLM lease sales are held online through EnergyNet
The BLM is seeking
public input during the scoping period ending Wednesday, July 30 at
11:59 pm CST.
To submit a scoping comment, go to the Documents
section on the left-hand column of this page or click the
green “Participate Now” button.
All comments must be received by the close of the scoping
period. There will be no exceptions for late comments, please plan accordingly.
Please note that the most useful public scoping comments
are substantive comments that do one or more of the following:
1. Identify issues relevant to the proposed action;
2. Offer reasonable alternatives;
3. Propose the extent to which those issues and alternatives
should be analyzed;
4. Or identify new technical or scientific information for the
BLM to consider in the environmental analysis to be prepared in compliance with
the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).
Comments which contain only opinions or preferences, or
comments that are essentially identical to other comments will not be
specifically addressed in the environmental review process.
Before including your address, phone number, e-mail
address, or other personal identifying information in your public scoping
comment, you should be aware that your entire comment – including your personal
identifying information – may be made publicly available at any time. While you
can ask us in your comment to withhold your personal identifying information
from public review, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to do so.
A detailed map for the parcel proposed for
leasing can be found by clicking the "Maps" link on the left
side of this web page.
The next opportunity for public comment is when the draft
environmental assessment (EA) is made available for public review, which is
expected sometime in November 2025. Additionally, a 30-day public protest
period begins the day the lease sale notice is posted.
