Project Description

3/10/26 EA -The applicant on the Hoverson #00174 grazing allotment has applied for a change in season of use and class of livestock. The application requests a season of use on the Back Pasture of November 15th through May 30th.  The class of livestock applied for is cattle only. The application also requests a change in class of livestock on the rest of the allotment, resulting in only cattle being authorized.  

The Hoverson Allotment #00174 is located approximately 25 miles east of Jordan, Montana in Garfield County.  The Hoverson Allotment consists of 2,813 acres of BLM managed lands containing 488 AUMs of authorized use.  The allotment also contains 4,186 acres of deeded land. Most of the BLM parcels are in the rough uplands (badlands). Big Dry Creek flows through the allotment mostly through deeded land.  The Hoverson Allotment’s last Land Health Assessment was signed October 18, 2022.

The purpose of this action is for BLM to respond to the application for grazing to allocate all of the active AUMs to authorize cattle grazing.  Sheep would be removed from the permit.The need is to analyze the effects of issuing this permit, including proposed changes, for the Hoverson Allotmnet (#00174) allotment, and ensure the allotment continues to achieve Rangeland Health Standards. The permit is needed to authorize livestock grazing on the allotment. The action is warranted due to the applicant submitting a valid 4130-1a (Grazing Preference Application), 4130-1 (Grazing Application-Grazing Schedule), 4130-1b (Grazing Application- Supplemental Information) and 4120-8 (Assignment of Range Improvements) application documents.
(CE- The proposed action is to ensure the allotment continues to meet Standards for Rangeland Health and issue the grazing permit to the applicant with existing terms and conditions. The term of the Hoverson Allotment grazing permit would be issued from March 1, 2026, to February 28, 2036.)

What's New

The BLM is accepting scoping comments from March 10, 2026, through March 25, 2026. BLM is interested in any resource concerns or alternative means of achieving the project's purpose and need. Scoping comments can be submitted in ePlanning via the green "Participate Now" feature. Comments may also be mailed to BLM MCFO, 111 Garryowen Road, Miles City MT 59301. Comments received or post-marked after the closing date may not be accepted.
