Project Description

The BLM proposes to provide permission to the landowners (i.e., applicants) to reduce hazardous fuels on BLM lands within 200 feet of the applicants’ property. 

Vegetation treatments approved under the Defensible Space Fuels Reduction Permits include any of the following:

• Cutting live or dead vegetation less than 10 inches in diameter (as measured 4.5 feet above the ground on the uphill side of the tree) using hand tools or chainsaws. All trunks shall be cut horizontally to two inches or lower to the ground. Removal of litter and duff or larger dead materials may occur. Any wood removed for personal use may require a separate firewood collection permit.

• Mastication or use of other equipment to cut live or dead vegetation less than 10 inches in diameter (as measured 4.5 feet above the ground on the uphill side of the tree). Equipment can also be used to facilitate removal of cut vegetation from BLM lands on to private property. All trunks shall be cut horizontally to two inches or lower to the ground. Total removal of live woody tree cover should not exceed 40-60% of pre-thinning cover. Use of equipment is not permitted unless specified in the permit.

• Cutting grasses and forbs with a string cutter.

Preliminary determination of no historic properties affected.
