Project Description

The Bureau of Land Management Safford Field Office (BLM SFO) is proposing to participate in a land exchange with Freeport Minerals Corporation (FMC). The proposal includes the acquisition of five non-Federal parcels totaling approximately 5,700 acres by the United States (U.S.) in exchange for two Federal parcels to FMC (~24,600 acres). The acquisition by the U.S. of the non-Federal lands would expand recreation access, protect critical riparian areas, and enhance wildlife habitat and corridors for big game. Benefits of the disposal of Federal lands include the reduction in lands that are either inaccessible or difficult to publicly access, consolidation of private ownership within an active mining area, and continued socio-economic benefits for local residents and businesses.

A public comment period will run from July 29, 2026 through September 14, 2026, and a public meeting will be held August 12, 2026 at the Graham County General Services Building from 5-7 pm.
