The Challis Herd Management Area (CHMA) Wild Horse Population Management Plan Environmental Assessment (EA) is available.
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Challis Field Office, has completed the Challis Herd Management Area (CHMA) Wild Horse Population Management Plan Environmental Assessment (EA).  The CHMA is comprised of 154,150 acres of BLM administered lands and is entirely in Custer County.  The CHMA is south of the city of Challis and is bounded by the Salmon River on the North, East Fork of the Salmon River to the west, Highway 93 on the east and the Herd Creek highlands to the south.  The Action plan for the population management of wild horses in the CHMA uses a variety of methods that include removing horses by helicopter drive trapping, horseback drive trapping and bait trapping.  The plan also includes temporary fertility control treatments and maintaining the sex ratio of 60:40 males to females and maintain the geldings that have been on the range since 2009.  As part of the plan, three protective spring exclosures would be built.
