Project Description

The Yuba Watershed Institute (YWI) proposes to remove invasive plants, brush, and small diameter trees on lands administered by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) near Pinewoods Road, Gracie Road, Banner Mountain Trail, and Banner Lava Cap Road in Nevada County. The goal of the project is to reduce surface, ladder, and canopy fuels within the roughly 192-acre project area in order to reduce the risk of high severity wildfire, improve safety for fire personnel and members of the public during a wildfire event, and help protect critical infrastructure such as the Nevada Irrigation District’s canals and Nevada City’s water storage and water treatment facilities, and important recreation opportunities such as Nevada County Sportsmen Club’s archery range and the Cascade Canal Trail.      
 
Under this proposed action, a shaded fuel break would be constructed within 200 feet of critical infrastructure (Table 1) within the project area. The project would emphasize treatments along roads and private property as reflected on the project map. Treatment methods analyzed under this DNA include mechanical mastication, mechanical harvesting, skidding, construction of temporary log decks, hand cutting, piling, chipping, pile and understory burning including manual and mechanical line construction; and may utilize the use of tracked and/or wheeled equipment throughout the project area.
