Project Description

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is conducting a wild horse and burro bait trap gather within the Callaghan Complex, located about 7 miles south of Battle Mountain to approximately 6 miles north of Austin. In coordination with the gather, BLM is proposing to close public lands within and around the Callaghan, South Shoshone, Bald Mountain, Hickison (north of US Route 50) Herd Management Areas (HMAs), of the Callaghan Complex, pursuant to the Federal Land Policy and Management Act of 1976 (FLMPA), as amended, and 43 CFR § 8364.1. The BLM has determined that temporary closure of the affected land is necessary to conduct safe, efficient, and successful wild horse and burro gather operations while ensuring humane care and treatment of all animals gathered.
The closure is temporary and limited to the 5-mile area surrounding active trapping locations within the Callaghan Complex. This Decision Record provides notice that the entire Callaghan Complex is subject to temporary closure. Closure will be enforced only within five miles of an active trap site or holding facility at any given time, consistent with the Categorical Exclusion documentation. The BLM’s decision is rational, preventive, and within BLM’s statutory and regulatory authority.
