Project Description

The BLM proposes to fall, buck, and scale sample trees (otherwise known as sample tree falling) to ensure the accuracy of timber sale cruises for future forest management actions. The process assists the BLM in accurately calculating volumes by refining the volume equations used in the modeling process. The proposed action would occur with any cruise design method, especially in timber sales that have been cruised using the Probability Proportional to Prediction (3-P) or variable plot cruising method (USDA-USFS Grosenbaugh, L. R. 1965), where there is a high degree of variability between the trees, or where the trees have a high amount of defect.  
Randomly selected trees would be felled only in areas that have been planned and marked, and the trees to be felled would consist of a subset of the trees designated for removal in the timber harvest area, with an average sampling intensity of one tree per acre. Sample tree felling is one of the last activities performed during timber sale preparation. Following the BLM’s completion of planning and environmental analysis, including all site inventories (e.g., wildlife, botany, and cultural resources), and of sale layout and preparation, the BLM would conduct sample tree felling as part of the timber cruising process.

The Decision authorizesimplementation of sample tree falling in the Lost Horse timber sales and the Dora Crosby project area.

Aperson adversely affected by this decision may appeal to the Interior Board of Land Appeals under 43 CFR Part 4. A Notice of Appeal must be filed within 30 days of the date the public is notified of the decision (August 17, 2026)
