Project Description

The Bureau of Land Management, Lower Sonoran Field Office (BLM) is planning for future management of the Goldfield area near Apache Junction. The BLM plans to develop a recreation area management plan to identify appropriate recreational uses, avoid user conflicts, ensure public health and safety, and protect natural and cultural resources in conformance with laws and land use plans. 

The proposed recreation area management plan would manage around 1,100 acres and could expand recreational opportunities for Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) driving, horseback riding, and other recreational activities, such as staging areas and corresponding routes. Route inventory is currently being completed by a contractor through the Arizona State Office. Travel Management decisions will be made once the recreational uses have been identified in this plan.

What's New

On February 5, 2024, a temporary public lands closure went into effect for select public lands in Pinal County for the construction of the Goldfield Recreation Area. The area is closed to all entry for up to two years. Hackamore Road remains open to through travel only. Camping is prohibited. The BLM published a notice of temporary closure in the Federal Register on January 4, 2024. A map of the project area is available in the Documents section.

A prior Apache Junction Goldfield Recreation Area decision issued on October 19, 2023 was rescinded on February 26, 2025.
