Project Description

The proposed action is to implement a suite of recreation management and habitat restoration strategies to improve visitor access and to mitigate the adverse effects of unmanaged, intensive recreation at the Travertine Hot Springs Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC) near Bridgeport in Mono County, California. The proposed action would primarily entail the implementation of three categories of management and restoration activities: 1) Defining trail access points and authorized trails to facilitate visitor use; 2) Eliminating and rehabilitating redundant and unauthorized user created trails to mitigate adverse effects to natural and cultural resources; and 3) Reshaping and delineating pullouts and parking areas to discourage camping and encourage use of the authorized trail system. 

The purpose of the proposed action is to define vehicle parking and travel routes, define pedestrian travel routes, remove illegal campsites, restore disturbed sites, and provide clear directional and educational signage within and adjacent to the ACEC. The proposed action is needed to improve visitor experiences, protect the area’s sensitive natural and cultural resources, and to cooperatively manage other resource uses within and adjacent to the ACEC.  The need for the project is also established by the BLM's Travertine Hot Springs ACEC Plan (USDI BLM 1995) which is to manage recreation use while protecting candidate species habitat, geologic features, and cultural and Native American values.  

National Historic Preservation Act Compliance (Section 106):

Preliminary determination of no adverse effect to historic properties (Date 12/06/2016).

Responsibilities under the National Historic Preservation Act for the proposed activity are complete (2/18/22).
