Project Description

The Bureau of Land Management's Central Coast Field Office is preparing a supplemental environmental impact statement (EIS) for oil and gas leasing and development on public lands in Alameda, Contra Costa, Monterey, San Benito, San Mateo, Santa Clara, and Santa Cruz counties, and portions of Fresno, Merced, and San Joaquin counties. 

The supplemental EIS will update the agency's previous analysis published in 2019 for oil and gas leasing and development on BLM-managed public land and mineral estate in the Central Coast Field Office. Lands withdrawn from mineral entry by law, including national monuments and designated wilderness areas, would remain unavailable for leasing and development.  This effort is in response to a settlement agreement in Case No. 3:19-cv-07155-JSC filed with the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California on December 5, 2022.

What's New

The Bureau of Land Management is seeking public comments on the Central Coast Field Office Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS) for oil and gas leasing and development.

The EPA published a Federal Register Notice of Availability (NOA) on January 16, 2025. The public comment period ends on March 6, 2026.

A public meeting will be held on January 29, 2026. More information about the public meeting is included in the BLM News Release.
