Project Description

The River Hill Hazardous Fuels Reduction project’s Proposed Action includes approximately
8,297 acres of BLM-managed land (Project Area) across dry conifer forest and non-conifer plant
communities (Table 2). The proposed action includes fuels management activities, such as small
diameter thinning, hand piling, burning of vegetation, and follow-up prescribed fire applied to
ground as broadcast and/or underburning, consistent with the selected alternative (BLM 2022a,
Appendix 1, pp. 89-91, 108-110).This project would begin implementation as early as October
of 2024 and would be implemented over 5 years dependent on funding, staffing, and contracting
tools. The BLM estimates that annual small diameter thinning and prescribed fire treatments
(i.e., fuels treatments) would be implemented at approximately 800 acres per year, beginning
with treatments along Potential wildfire Operational Delineations (PODs), adjacent to the Rogue
Gold Forest Management Plan’s proposed commercial actions, and adjacent to private lands
Prescribed understory burning will occur on 120 acres of the proposed action under the Title II
funded financial assistance agreement with Lomakatsi (Tribal Workforce Development in West
Bear All-Lands), within The Jacksonville Community Wildfire Protection Project.
