Project Description

Canyoneering SRPs in the San Rafael Swell and surrounding area. BLM Price Field Office is considering issuing Special Recreation Permits (SRP) for commercially guided canyoneering and hiking in 15 technical canyons within the San Rafael Swell and San Rafael Desert. Thirteen of the canyons are in designated Wilderness Areas. All fifteen canyons are popular among recreationists for their scenic values, and their range of difficulty levels, features, challenging obstacles bypass options, and remoteness. These canyon features such as drop-offs (rappels), exposed climbing, or deep potholes which require technical knowledge and/or equipment and a high level of skill or trained leadership. They provide as wide a use season as practical based on their elevation and water availability.

The BLM attached an updated project description on April 8, 2026. An anticipated decision date is planned for May 2026, with implementation following.
