Project Description

An environmental assessment (EA) is being prepared to document the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Arizona Strip Field Office review of 132 parcels (287,284 acres) nominated for two separate quarterly Competitive Oil and Gas Lease Sales. The first lease sale, to be held in December 2026, includes 40 oil and gas parcels totaling 78,708 acres. The second lease sale, to be held in February 2027, includes 92 parcels totaling 208,576 acres. The nominated lease parcels are in Mohave County, Arizona. These lease parcels contain federal minerals managed by the BLM and consist primarily of BLM surface land, although portions of two parcels have private surface.

Leasing is the first step in the process to develop federal oil and gas resources. Before development operations can begin, an operator must submit an application for permit to drill detailing development plans. The BLM reviews applications for permits to drill, posts them for public review, conducts a site-specific environmental review  and coordinates with partners and stakeholders. 

All parcels that are included in a federal oil and gas lease sale include appropriate stipulations to protect important natural resources. Information on current and upcoming BLM leases is available through the National Fluid Lease Sale System. BLM lease sales are held online through Efficient Markets.

A 30-day public comment period is currently open for the draft environmental assessment (EA) to receive public input on plans to include 132 parcels over 287,284 acres in Arizona. This includes the 40 oil and gas parcels which may be offered for sale in December 2026 totaling 78,708 acres, as well as the 92 oil and gas parcels totaling 208,576 acres that may be included in a February 2027 sale. The comment period ends September 9, 2026.
