Project Description

The Lewistown Field Office of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) prepared this Record of
Decision (ROD) on the Proposed Resource Management Plan and Final Environmental Impact
Statement (Proposed RMP/Final EIS) for the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument
(Monument). The Proposed RMP/Final EIS was published in January 2008.

The Monument was established on January 17, 2001, when President Clinton issued a Proclamation
under the provisions of the Antiquities Act of 1906. The Proclamation states that the Monument
contains many natural resources on BLM land in the Missouri Breaks. From Fort Benton downstream to the James Kipp Recreation Area, the Monument includes 149 miles of the Upper Missouri NationalWild and Scenic River, the adjacent Breaks country, and portions of Arrow Creek, Antelope Creek, and the Judith River. The Monument also includes six wilderness study areas, the Cow Creek Area ofCritical Environmental Concern (ACEC), and segments of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail and the Nez Perce National Historic Trail.
