What's New

Current Status: BLM is reviewing the public input and preparing the final feasibility study.
 
Past Project Updates: 

March 13-April 14, 2025 - BLM released the draft feasibility study for public review and comment, along with a news release and notification to interested stakeholders.

 

January-March 2025 - BLM is completing the draft feasibility study based on public input, agency input, and following the criteria required in the National Trails System Act. BLM plans to release the draft study during this period for public review and a 30-day comment period. This project page will be updated once the draft study is released.

 

October-December 2024 - BLM began preparing the draft feasibility study based on public input, agency input, and following the criteria required in the National Trails System Act.

 

July-September 2024 - BLM compiled the public's input and comments received from April through June 2024, as well as additional land management agency input, and will use that input to inform the draft feasibility study.
 

April - June 2024 - The BLM also had an ArcGIS comment tool to allow the public to comment on the project in a spatial context.

 

June 2024 - BLM Alaska hosted 3 virtual listening sessions for the project on June 11, 13, and 27, 2024 via Zoom. Transcripts of those meetings can be found in the Documents page.

 

April 2024 - BLM Alaska hosted five in-person public engagement sessions for the Alaska Long Trail Feasibility Study April 8-12, 2024.

January 2024 - The Alaska Long Trail feasibility study story map went live. Please visit the interactive map web page to learn more. 

 

December 2023 - BLM Alaska began the feasibility study process and developed stakeholder lists, planned public meetings, and worked on a comprehensive plan for the study.

 

For more information see Frequently Asked Questions at the FAQ page. Visit the FY2023 Consolidated Appropriations Act, section 502, for legislative text on the project. The legislation directed the BLM to "study the feasibility of designating the trail described in subparagraph (A), including evaluating the potential impacts of the trail on rights-of-way, existing rights, or other recreational uses of the land proposed to be used for the trail."
