Project Description

The Bureau of Land Management Las Vegas Field Office is proposing to restore and reconnect fragmented habitat in the northern Ivanpah Valley for the threatened desert tortoise in and around the Large-Scale Translocation Site (LSTS), a 40 square-mile area of tortoise habitat that was fenced in 1996 to experimentally relocate desert tortoises displaced by development or abandoned by pet owners. The project area is located west of Interstate 15 between the towns of Goodsprings and Primm, Nevada. 

The existing fences in the LSTS interrupt animal movements through the Ivanpah Valley. Other fences, used for reducing road-related tortoise mortality are either missing, or not connected to culverts to allow safe animal passage beneath the roadway. The proposed project would include removal, modification and addition of fencing to achieve habitat connectivity objectives. Additional activities envisioned include monitoring and treatment of weeds, especially where ground disturbing activities occur, and the restoration of native vegetation near culverts or elsewhere to enhance habitat characteristics.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Las Vegas Field Office (LVFO) announces the start of the public comment period for the Northern Ivanpah Valley Desert Tortoise Habitat Connectivity and Restoration Project. The 30-day comment period begins on July 10, 2024, and ends on August 10, 2024.
