Project Description

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) St. George Field Office prepared the SR9 Campground Management Environmental Assessment (EA), (DOI-BLM-UT-C030-2025-0019-EA) to evaluate proposed recreation management improvements on BLM-managed public lands in Washington County, Utah. The Proposed Action includes developing two new campgrounds, constructing a trailhead and event staging area, establishing designate dispersed campsites, restoring areas from dispersed camping impacts, and identifying Limited to Designated Camping Areas.  

The project area encompasses public lands along the Utah State Route 9 (SR9) corridor between Hurricane, Utah, and the gateway to Zion National Park. The area is recognized for its high scenic value, cultural resources, sensitive habitats, and popularity as a recreation destination. 

The purpose of the Proposed Action is to manage dispersed camping along the SR9 corridor to reduce resource impacts, improve visitor experience, and provide sustainable camping opportunities consistent with BLM land use objectives (EA Section 1.2). All implementation and design features described in Appendix B of the EA would be applied to avoid or minimize environmental impacts.

What's New

3/23/2026: The final environmental assessment, Decision Record, and Finding of No Significant Impact have been published. There will be a 30-day appeal period that will end on 4/22/2026.

12/9/2025: The preliminary environmental assessment is available for review and public comment. The comment period will end on December 24th, 2025. Please submit your comments using the green "Participate Now" button on the left hand side of this website. Comments submitted through email will not be accepted.

6/3/2025: The preliminary scoping period is closed. Thank you for your participation. The BLM will now prepare a preliminary environmental assessment which will be available for public review upon completion.

5/1/2025: The preliminary scoping period is open for this project. Please provide your comments using the green "Participate Now" button.
