Project Description

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) proposes to gather and remove 182 wild horses from the Snowstorm Mountains and Little Humboldt Herd Management Areas (HMAs) due to the loss of wild horse habitat in these HMAs as a result of the 2025 Jakes Fire. The Jakes Fire ignited August 1, 2025, and was contained by August 16, 2025. The fire burned a total of approximately 82,217 acres, including 26% of the Snowstorm Mountains Herd Management Area (HMA) and 90% of the Little Humboldt HMA. 

Loss of forage is the most urgent factor for removing excess wild horses. The BLM also considers the impact of excess wild horse grazing on fire rehabilitation projects as well as the impact on habitat for sensitive wildlife species. Escalating problems within these HMAs include drought conditions, excess wild horse population over AML, and sustained wild horse grazing utilization within the burn scar that jeopardizes the recovery of forage resources, wildlife habitats. Ultimately, wild horse health and condition will suffer and decline if the range is unable to recover sufficiently from the fire to sustain wild horses within AML.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Humboldt River Field Office and Tuscarora Field Office have completed Jakes Fire Emergency Wild Horse Gather Determination of NEPA Adequacy (DNA) and issued a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) and a Decision.
