Project Description

This project is a collaboration with the Private Landowners, State Trust Lands, and the UDWR. All the funding and permitting has already been completed, and stream restoration on Lee Creek has already been carried out on state and private lands upstream of the BLM parcels. 

The project site is located on Lee Creek in the Simpson Mountains. Lee Creek is a perennial stream that is predominately spring fed and sees peak flows of around five to ten cubic feet per second (CFS). Approximately two miles of BLM land would be treated, resulting in roughly 220 structures being utilized. Work would last about a week and be scheduled to take place in late June or July of 2026. The goal of the project is to increase the amount of time in the year that water is present in Lee Creek, benefiting wildlife, livestock, and irrigators. Other auxiliary benefits would include raising the water table, increasing hydraulic and habitat complexity, and aggrading the channel to help recover incision. This would be accomplished by using natural materials and processes known as low tech process-based restoration (LTPBR). Specifically, this project would utilize beaver dam analogues and post assisted log structures to achieve rehabilitation goals. These structures are designed to mimic natural beaver dams and log jams within the system, and would be constructed by hand, using all natural materials. Specifically, untreated 6-foot-tall wood posts would be purchased from the local lumber yard and driven into the stream bed using a hydraulic post pounder. Locally sourced material such as Juniper and Sage Brush would be taken from nearby state lands, in association with an ongoing thinning project, and used as the fill material woven between the pounded posts. A crew of six to eight members would access the creek via the road that parallels the stream and spend five to ten minutes pounding posts before moving to the next location. All structures would be placed within the stream channel below the ordinary high-water mark, and protective measures would be applied (Attachment 2) to protect the adjacent riparian areas.
