Project Description

The purpose of the Proposed Action is to use vegetation management methods to reduce fire risk, restore ecological function, promote wildlife habitat, provide biomass (traditionally used for firewood), and restore disturbed off-road incursion areas within the Bears Ears National Monument (BENM), specifically on Cedar Mesa. Fuels treatments would be conducted along designated roads and would reduce forest stand densities and ladder fuels, restore native herb, forb and shrub vegetation, reduce catastrophic fire risk, improve wildlife habitat, vegetation variability (heterogeneity), and provide biomass utilization where feasible.

BLM will use the NEPA project listing to ePlanning to satisfy the public involvement requirements under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) (54 U.S.C 306108) pursuant to 36 CFR 800.2(d)(3). The information about historic and cultural resources within the area of potential effect for this undertaking will assist the BLM in identifying and evaluating impacts to such resources in the context of both NEPA and Section 106 of the NHPA.
