Project Description

The 2023 Big League Timber Management Project Environmental Assessment (EA) was cancelled following the BLM's discovery of the accidental omission of information. The BLM subsequently withdrew the associated finding of no significant impact (FONSI). In addition to correcting that omission, over the past several months the Upper Willamette Field Office interdisciplinary team has been engaged in revising the Big League Timber Management Project and its approach to the analysis of its environmental effects. The BLM revised the proposed action by removing 1,899 acres of Harvest Land Base (HLB) from the project area and redesigned the analysis document by applying a conventional “site-specific” approach rather than a programmatic approach. This means that the Big League EA now includes information about where and under what conditions certain project design features would be implemented. 

The proposed actions of the Big League Timber Management Project remain unchanged: to contribute timber for commercial sale, to satisfy the statutory requirements of the Oregon and California Railroad Revested Lands Sustained Yield Management Act of 1937 (O&C Act), and to meet management direction contained in the 2016 Northwestern and Coastal Oregon Resource Management Plan (RMP). These actions would include variable-retention regeneration harvest, commercial thinning, and associated timber harvest activities such as snag creation, road work, quarry operations and expansion, fuels reduction, and reforestation. 

The 2023 Big League Timber Management Project has been marked “cancelled” on the previous National NEPA Registry (ePlanning) site. That site remains available for viewing, but none of the information or documents contained there should be considered current or applicable to the 2025 Big League Timber Management Project EA.
