Project Description

The Nevada Division of Minerals (NDOM) is proposing to permanently close 47 abandoned mine hazards around the ghost town of Delamar. Eleven of these hazards are located on patented mining claims, while the remaining thirty-six are on BLM-managed public lands. These hazards have been safeguarded by fencing but require constant maintenance. To eliminate the costs associated with ongoing maintenance, NDOM has collaborated with the Nevada BLM State Office and Nevada Department of Wildlife to survey the hazards and determine the appropriate closure methods. Some of these sites have been identified for closure with bat-compatible closures (BCCs), while others would be closed using polyurethane foam. The remaining sites would likely be backfilled by either skid steer or backhoe with available material; if no backfill material is available, these sites would be closed using foam. All closures would be completed with minimal disturbance, as BCCs and polyurethane foam plugs having virtually no surface disturbance.
